This week, you've most likely seen a hologram (if not today). That's right. Holograms can be found all over the place. Forget about Princess Leia begging for support in science fiction; the ones you're likely to have seen aren't quite as glamorous. They are, however, instrumental.
The holograms you've seen are closer than you think...in truth, they're probably right now in your back pocket. A good example is your credit card or driver's license. An angled mirror splits a laser beam into two different beams to produce these holograms. As a result, an origin beam and a reflection beam are created. Both are reflected off of other tilted mirrors but in opposite directions. The object beam is then reflected off the hologram image-forming object and onto the end surface (also known as the holographic plate), while the reflection beam is guided straight onto the plate. The hologram is formed when these two beams collide.
